先说最基本的大原则，这事儿你肯定听过：
* fewer 用在可数名词上。就是那些你能一个一个数出来的东西。比如，apples, books, students, mistakes。
* less 用在不可数名词上。就是那些你数不出来的，一整块的，或者抽象的概念。比如，water, time, information, money。

简单粗暴的例子：
* He made fewer mistakes this time. (mistakes 是可数的，一个错误，两个错误)
* I have less time than I thought. (time 是不可数的，你不能说一个时间，两个时间)

到这里都好理解。但GMAT不考这么简单的。它会给你加上一个“of”，变成fewer of和less of。这个“of”是干嘛的？

“of”的作用，说白了就是划定一个范围。它后面跟的，通常是一个特定的、已经存在的群体。一般会用the, these, those, them, us这类词来限定。

你看这个区别：
* I have fewer books. (我拥有的书变少了，一个泛指的概念)
* I have read fewer of the books on the list. (书单上这些书里，我读过的比较少。范围被限定在了“书单上的书”这个圈子里)

同理：
* I need less water. (我需要的水量变少了)
* Less of the water in this bottle is clean. (这瓶里的水，干净的部分比较少。范围是“这瓶水”)

GMAT实战场景一：基础可数名词陷阱

来看一个句子，这是GMAT最喜欢出的基础款：

Of the hundred applicants for the job, the recruiter decided to interview less of them than originally planned due to time constraints.

这个句子马上就能发现问题。
1. 找到核心名词：“them”。这个them指代的是谁？往前找，是“the hundred applicants”。
2. 判断可数不可数：“applicants”（申请人）显然是可数的。你能数出来一个申请人，两个申请人。
3. 套用规则：既然是可数名词，那就必须用fewer。

所以，“less of them”是绝对的语法错误。正确的句子应该是：

Of the hundred applicants for the job, the recruiter decided to interview fewer of them than originally planned due to time constraints.

这个坑比较浅，但却是最常见的。GMAT考官就是想测试你有没有记住“fewer对可数，less对不可数”这个基本功。做题的时候，看到less，马上就去检查它修饰的名词是不是不可数的。如果不是，那这个选项大概率可以直接排除了。

现在看一个不可数的例子：

Although the new CEO delivered a powerful speech, fewer of its substance resonated with the veteran employees.

这个句子问题在哪？
1. 找到核心名词：“its substance”。its指代的是“speech”，所以名词是“substance”（实质内容）。
2. 判断可数不可数：“substance”作为一个概念，是抽象的，不可数的。你不能说“一个内容，两个内容”。
3. 套用规则：不可数名词，必须用less。

所以，“fewer of its substance”是错的。正确的改法是：

Although the new CEO delivered a powerful speech, less of its substance resonated with the veteran employees.

这个例子说明，GMAT不光考具体的东西，还喜欢考抽象概念。比如information, advice, progress, evidence这些词，都是不可数的，永远要搭配less。

GMAT实战场景三：最经典的“钱”和“时间”陷阱

GMAT最阴险的地方，是它会用一些我们日常生活中会用错的词来迷惑你。最典型的就是“钱”（money）和“时间”（time）。

先看钱：

He has less money than his brother. (正确。money是不可数概念)
He has fewer dollars than his brother. (正确。dollars是可数的，一张一张的钞票)

GMAT会把这个逻辑放进复杂的句子里：

Because of the recent budget cuts, the department has less of the funds allocated for research than it did last year.

分析一下：
1. 核心名词：“the funds”（资金）。
2. 判断可数不可数：这里的“funds”虽然有s，但它在语境里通常被当作一个整体的、总的金额来看待，类似于money，是一个集合概念。所以它在这里是不可数的。你不能说“一个资金，两个资金”，你说的是“一笔资金”。
3. 套用规则：既然是不可数概念，用“less of”就是对的。

这个例子就有点tricky了。你需要根据上下文判断这个词到底是被当作一个整体概念，还是一个个独立的单位。再比如“population”，你可能会说“less population”（更少的人口，把它当成一个整体衡量指标），但如果你指代的是组成人口的个体，你就要说“fewer people”（更少的人）。

时间也一样：

We have less time for this project. (正确。time是不可数概念)
We have fewer hours to finish this. (正确。hours是可数的)

GMAT的句子会这样：

The team spent fewer of the allocated hours on administrative tasks, focusing instead on core development.

这个句子就是对的。因为“hours”是明确的可数单位。如果把句子改成“…spent less of the allocated time…”，也同样是对的。GMAT考的就是你能不能分辨出这个核心区别。

GMAT实战场景四：the number of / the amount of

这个知识点经常和fewer/less捆绑出现。记住这个搭配：
* The number of + 可数名词复数
* The amount of + 不可数名词

GMAT会怎么把它们和fewer/less结合起来呢？它会用一个比较级的句子。

看例子：

This year, the number of students who enrolled is lower, meaning the university will collect less tuition.

这个句子没问题。the number of后面跟了可数的students。less后面跟了不可数的tuition。

但如果句子变成这样：

Compared to last year, a lesser number of students enrolled this year.

这就错了。“number”本身虽然是个单词，但它指代的是“students”的数量，而students是可数的。所以，描述“number”的多少，应该用fewer（a smaller number）或者直接用lower。 “lesser number”在GMAT语法里是绝对错误的用法。

正确的说法是：
Compared to last year, a smaller number of students enrolled this year.
或者
Compared to last year, fewer students enrolled.

记住这个公式：
* a smaller/lower number of + 可数名词
* a smaller/lesser amount of + 不可数名词

GMAT考官知道很多人会混用lesser和fewer，所以特别喜欢在这里出题。

一个需要注意的特例：less than + 数字

这是个常见的例外，也是很多人搞混的地方。在口语和一些书面语中，我们经常会看到“less than”后面直接跟一个数字，即使这个数字修饰的是可数名词。

比如：The trip will take less than five hours.
再比如：There were less than 20 people at the meeting.

严格来说，hours和people都是可数的，应该用fewer。所以理论上应该写“fewer than five hours”和“fewer than 20 people”。

为什么“less than”也可以接受呢？因为在这种用法里，它把后面的数字和单位看作一个整体的量（a quantity or measurement），而不是单个可数的单位。比如“five hours”被看作是一整段“时间量”，而不是五个独立的“小时”。

那么GMAT怎么处理这个情况？
GMAT官方指南（OG）承认这种用法。但是，在SC选项里，如果同时出现了“fewer than 20 people”和“less than 20 people”，GMAT会优先选择“fewer than”作为更规范、更严谨的答案。

所以你的策略应该是：
1. 优先选择遵循“fewer对可数，less对不可数”这个基本原则的选项。
2. 只有在没有更好的选项时，才考虑接受“less than + 数字 + 可数名词”这种用法。
3. 但“less of + 可数名词”是绝对不能接受的，比如“less of the people”一定是错的。

总结一个实战操作流程

下次在GMAT SC题里遇到fewer或者less，你可以按下面这个步骤来判断：
1. 定位：找到fewer/less修饰的核心名词是什么。如果有名词省略了，根据上下文把它找出来（比如fewer of them里的them）。
2. 判断：问自己，这个名词是可数的还是不可数的？能不能在后面加s？能不能用one, two, three来数？
3. 匹配：可数名词配fewer，不可数名词配less。任何不匹配的选项，都是错误选项，可以直接划掉。
4. 检查特殊结构：
* 看到“of”，想一下是不是在说“一个特定范围里的一部分”。
* 看到“number/amount”，检查搭配是否正确 (a smaller number of, a lesser amount of)。
